Meet the Teacher

Hello!  My name is Mrs. Ochoa and I am your English teacher for the 2024-2025 school year.  I've been teaching at King/Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science for the past 14 years and 25 years, in total, in the teaching profession. I was born in the Philippines, but raised in Southern California.  My father served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Hawaii, San Diego, and Long Beach.  My mother is a retired English teacher from the Los Angeles Unified School District and I am proud to follow in her footsteps.

After high school, I attended Long Beach City College and graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies.  I transferred to California State University, Long Beach and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a minor in English Education.  I continued my education at CSULB, earned a Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential in English, started my teaching career at John C. Fremont High School, and then completed a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction.

In my leisure time, I like to read books, watch movies, go to music concerts & Broadway plays, attend sporting events (my favorite team is the LA Kings), plant flowers in my garden, and spend time with my family.  In the winter, I snowboard in our local mountains and ice skate or play ice hockey.  In the spring and summer, I run at the beach, train for races (5K to full marathon distances), ride my bike, and play golf.

As a lifelong learner, I cannot wait to engage you in critical thinking skills needed as developing readers and writers. I love teaching English and I am looking forward to getting to know each of you throughout the school year.  We will have a fun time learning and growing as a group.

                                                                                                                                                                                              Sincerely,

                                                                                                                                                                                              Mrs. Ochoa
